FPIC working group meets to develop guidelines

FPIC working group meets face-to-face to develop draft v1.0 of revised FPIC guidelines

The free, prior and informed consent (FPIC) working group recently met to continue revising the FSC Guidelines for applying FPIC within the forest management certification scope. The group included six FSC International members, one technical advisor from a certification body and three liaison persons, one to the Board of Directors, one to the Policy and Standards Committee and one for the Permanent Indigenous Peoples Committee. They were supported by a technical writer, a facilitator and the project coordinator.

The FSC Guidelines for FPIC (FSC-GUI-30-003 V1-0), describes the concept of FPIC and the step-by-step approach to designing and implementing an FPIC process on the ground in order to be in conformity with the FSC Principles and Criteria and the National Forest Stewardship Standard requirements in forest operations.

During an intense three-day workshop, the working group built on previous work to produce a draft verWorking Grosion 1.0 of the guidance document, which will be made available for 60 days on the FSC consultation platform at the beginning of March 2019. Stakeholders are encouraged to submit their feedback via the online consultation platform during this time. An additional avenue for active participation is via the consultative forum. Please contact social policy manager Joachim Meier-Dörnberg for further information about the forum. Read more…
